Wat Buddhai Sawan

According to the legend, Wat Buddhai Sawan was said to be King U-Thong’s royal residence in the name “Wiang Lek”. He had stayed at the residence for 3 years. Then he commissioned constructing the royal palace and the new capital city at an area called “Nong Sanoh”, on Ayutthaya Island at present. As a result, he donated the area of the residence to build a temple. This legend is the same as those of the construction of Wat Ayothaya and Krung si Ayutthaya.
The temple is located on the Chao Phraya River outside the city island opposite the mouth of a canal called Khlong Thor or Khlong Chakaiyai, the canal that drew water from Lob Buri River (Khlong Khumuang) in the north. There was a line of canal along the back of the Ancient Palace, and was connected to the Chao Phraya River in front of the temple. In Ayutthaya period, there were various villages of people with many nationalities around it, such as a Chinese village, a Muslim village, a Portuguese village and the Indo-Chinese who believed in Christianity.

The religious area was surrounded by low walls on the four sides with 92 meters in width and 192 meters in length. The royal chapel (the Ubosot, measuring 54 X 74 meters) was situated in front. The back portico of the royal chapel was extended to a square-shaped passage (measuring 54 X 74 meters) which surrounded the main prang (Stupa). Rows of Buddha images were situated along the passages.

The main prang is corn-shaped in Khmer’s arts style. It is believed to be built in early Ayutthaya period. This is in agreement with the legend of King U-Thong’s Wiang Lek Royal Residence. On the contrary, there is disagreement of some technical experts saying that the main prang should have been built in the reign of King Narai or in the late Ayutthaya period. However, the main prang is still complete, and was mainly renovated by Ayutthaya people in 1898 in the reign of King Chulalongkorn who once visited the temple.

Once, there was an image of King U-Thong situated in the front portico of the main prang. Later, the image was moved to Bangkok in the reign of King Buddha Yodfah, the first king of Rattanakosin, who commissioned modeling and changing the image by covering all of it with silver, and situated the image at Wat Phra Kaew (The Temple of the Emerald Buddha). King Buddha Yodfah commissioned modeling a standing Buddha image and placed it in the side portico of the main prang to replace the old one. On the same base of the main prang, there were canopies on both sides, and a Buddha image was situated in each canopy. At the end of the religious area, there was a big chapel (Ubosot, measuring 14 X 32 meters) which was mainly renovated by Field Marshal Por Phibulsongkhram in 1956, and the chapel is still used for religious activities.

In the south side of the main chapel, there was a wihan for a reclining Buddha image. The image was just renovated. There were also many big and small stupas in the area, which are believed to contain important royal bone ashes.

Outside the religious area or the monks’ area, there is building called “Tamnak Somdet Phra Buddha Kosajan” or Somdet Phra Buddha Kosajan’s pavilion. It is a two-storey building with a boat-shaped base, a characteristic of arts in the late Ayutthaya period. There were beautiful paintings on the walls on the second floor, which are believed to be painted in the late period of Ayutthaya. The paintings told the stories of Phra Buddha Kosajan when he went to pay homage to the foot-print of the Buddha in Langka. Nowadays, the paintings become blurred, and the style of building was imitated to build Jim Thompson’s, a famous store for silk fabric.
